Interior Summer Cleaning Tips for Used Vehicles

A used car owner wipes down the dashboard of his car.

When you buy a used vehicle from our team at Leamington GM, we make sure the vehicle is clean and ready to go, no matter when you choose to buy it. However, it never hurts to give the interior a good clean before the summer hits so it’s all ready for you to enjoy and complete with any personal touches you like. Most importantly, take the time to neutralize hidden odours, clean up any salt from past winters, and tackle trapped dirt by clearing and removing everything from the inside (including the mats), giving the interior a good vacuuming,  and both cleaning and providing UV protection to interior surfaces so it’s all ready for a great summer. Read on with our team at Leamington GM to learn how to do just that, and when you’re ready to buy a used vehicle from us, drop by and see us in Leamington!

Clear and Remove Everything

Start by getting rid of everything from the interior of your vehicle. This means emptying even the glovebox, centre console, and door pockets of any trash or clutter. Check underneath the seats and in the seat crevices for any debris, such as loose change or old receipts. Take the floor mats out and give them a good shake, and scrub any heavy dirt with a mild soap or rubber cleaner. Make sure you set them in the sun to dry completely before putting them back in.

Deep Vacuuming

Once the mats have been taken care of and anything hidden in the seat crevices has been removed, it’s time to give the interior a deep, thorough vacuuming. Start from one end (front or back, your choice!) to make sure you get everything, including the door pockets and other storage spaces you cleared out previously. Slide the seats all the way front and back as well to vacuum the tracks and areas underneath the seats. Use a crevice tool if you have it for cup holders and air vents as well. If you have fabric seats and an upholstery attachment for your vacuum as well, use that to also get any deeply embedded dirt out.

Surface Cleaning and UV Protection

Wipe down all hard plastic surfaces like the dashboard, centre console, and steering wheel using a microfiber cloth and a gentle automotive interior cleaner. Try to avoid cleaners with bleach or hydrogen peroxide, as these can damage the plastic if used too often. You also don’t want to spray glass cleaner directly onto any screens or navigation displays when cleaning them. Instead, use a clean, dry (or slightly damp) microfiber towel to wipe screens clean of any fingerprints or small debris. The inside of your windshield and windows can build up debris as well, so use a streak-free glass cleaner (which you should spray onto the microfiber cloth and not onto the glass itself) and give it a good wipe. Since summer brings more sunlight and some plastics can crack in prolonged heat (such as dashboard plastic), you can also treat exposed vinyl and plastics with an auto detailer that contains UV protection to help keep them safe.
