Instead, have it towed to our Service Department so our trained technicians can replace the battery and safely remove any sulfuric acid, along with repairing any damage the acid has done (it is corrosive).

    You’ve definitely experienced this in the winter: the driver turns the key, the engine rev-rev-revs, and everyone inside hopes and prays it turns over. Winter weather (and extreme heat like in the summertime) drains battery life more quickly, which is why batteries tend to die in the winter more often than any other time. Much like starting though, your GM vehicle should be able to start after just a few revs, so any in excess of four or more points toward a battery that’s dying (but isn’t quite dead yet, as if it was dead it wouldn’t turn over at all).

How long do batteries typically last?

GM vehicle batteries can last anywhere between one to seven years. This is due to many different factors affecting the lifespan of the battery itself. For one, batteries can be made of different materials, with some offering longer length than others. The weather that your vehicle is being driven in can also affect it (like extreme cold and extreme heat, which drain the battery more quickly). How often you drive your vehicle can also affect how long it lasts, with vehicles that aren’t driven as often usually seeing a longer battery life (though even vehicles that aren’t in use can lose battery life, especially if they’re sitting outside during the winter months).

Is a dead battery the only thing that can make my GM vehicle not start?

While dead batteries are typically the main cause of a GM vehicle not starting, there are other components that might be faulty as well. For example, the battery powers the engine starter which, if it’s damaged, won’t be able to start the engine. The Battery Management System (BMS) could also potentially need to be reset. When you bring your GM vehicle in to see our trained technicians for a battery service, they’ll inspect all of the elements, including the battery terminals (as sometimes corrosion can be the cause as well), and replace the damaged components as needed so your vehicle starts quickly.

How often should I get my battery serviced?

This allows our trained technicians to inspect the health of your battery, along with how the components of the system are holding up. That way, they can advise you on when they feel you might need to replace the battery and, if needed, replace it during the appointment if the power level is low/dead as well.
